As the two men walked toward Emmaus, with Jesus, they did not realize who he was. Then, while they were having dinner, they suddenly recognized that their friend, who had died, was alive again. In this painting, entitled Supper at Emmaus, Caravaggio captures that moment of recognition.
Created between 1601-02, the work is now owned by the National Gallery in London, England.
