Fra Angelico (c. 1395–1455), also known as Il Beato (the Blessed), was born Guido di Pietro. An early-renaissance painter, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
Known to be a humble and modest man, he created magnificent works of religious art, such as this tempera on panel known as the Deposition of Christ. The painting, which Fra Angelico produced between 1432 and 1434, is now owned by the National Museum of San Marco in Florence, Italy.
