In about 1580, El Greco painted this oil on canvas entitled Christ on the Cross Adored by Two Donors. The dress of the two men is clearly not from the first century. Artists, interpreting Biblical scenes, routinely placed their own surroundings, or incorporated their own time frames, into their work.
This famous painting, by one of the world's most respected artists, is now cared for by the Louvre, in Paris.
