One of Leonardo da Vinci's designs - a parachute without a hole at the top - seems highly strange by today's standards. Yet ... when the drawing was turned into an actual parachute 500 years later ... it worked!
When Leonardo first went to Florence, he was amazed by the city and its culture. Because he was illegitimate, he could study neither law nor medicine. Instead, his father hoped he would become an artist.
First attracting notice to his talents, Leonardo changed the way most artists of the time created their paints. Instead of using egg tempera, da Vinci used oils.
No one could believe the stunning results of his work.
