To absolve himself of any responsibility for condemning an innocent man to die, Pontius Pilate publicly washes his hands. Thereafter, he allows Jesus to be crucified.
The event is artistically rendered in this work by Hans Multscher. Created in 1437, the panel is now owned by the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, Germany.
