U-2 Spy Plane

This is the type of aircraft - a U-2 "spy plane" - which Major Richard Heyser flew over Cuba on the 14th of October, 1962.  The pictures he took that day greatly concerned President Kennedy and key members of America's government. 

What, for example, was the Soviet Union planning to do with those weapons, located on an island ninety miles south of the U.S. mainland?  And ... how should America respond?
