Assassination of John F. Kennedy

The Mannlicher-Carcano rifle was not the only weapon Lee Oswald owned. He also had a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver, bearing serial number V510210.

Around 12:40 p.m., ten minutes after Kennedy was shot, Oswald boarded a bus. (He still had his transfer when he was arrested.) He apparently went to his boarding house in the Oak Cliffs area of Dallas to get a jacket and his .38 revolver.

At approximately 1:15 p.m. CST, police officer J.D. Tippet was patrolling the area of 10th and Patton Streets. He saw Oswald who seemed to fit the description of an all-points bulletin. Even though eyewitnesses were in the area, Oswald allegedly shot and killed Tippit. Forty-five minutes had passed since the President had been fatally wounded.

Four bullets were later removed from Tippit's body. Four .38 special cartridges were found at the Tippit murder scene. Four .38 special cartridges were found in the revolver Oswald had in his possession when he was arrested. Five .38 special cartridges were in his pocket.

Although controversy still rages over whether Oswald killed the President, few doubt that he killed Officer Tippit.
