Easter Story
THE TOMB Some scholars and historians believe this tomb was the one into which Jesus' body was placed after he was crucified. It is just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, not far from the Damascus Gate. Image online, courtesy Wikimedia Commons.
Where was the tomb, cut out of rock, which Joseph used for Jesus' burial? Today, two places make that claim. The Garden Tomb, near the hill with the skull-like rock formations, is one contender. The other is a tomb (covered at the top with marble) inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (built over it as it was built over the claimed place of crucifixion). What does the Bible say about the tomb's location? The Gospel of John reports:
The Garden Tomb seems to fit that description, but arguments in favor of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre exist as well.
