This portrait depicts the original three-man crew selected to fly the Apollo 13 mission. From left to right, we see: Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly and Fred Haise. The crew photo was taken in December of 1969 - about four months before the moon launch.
Because he'd been exposed to measles, Ken Mattingly was forbidden to make the trip. As it happened, however, he was instrumental in helping the NASA team to figure-out how to get the crew back to Earth after a near-fatal problem developed in space.
