Easter Story - EASTER STORY in ART

This image depicts Jesus and Mary Magdalene in a detached fresco, entitled Noli me tangere ("Do not touch me"), created by Franciabigio between 1520-1525.  It is currently maintained by the Museo del Cenacolo di San Salvi, in Florence.  Image online, courtesy Web Gallery of Art.

During the centuries since Jesus lived, people have tried to comprehend the Easter story. Some of the world's greatest painters have created fine art depicting the passion of Christ as though it happened in their own time and within their own culture.

From the dress of bystanders and soldiers, to landscapes which were clearly not part of actual places and events, people have adapted the meaning of Easter to their own understanding.

And so it continues today.
